Inside Hyphen: Exploring UX Trends and Perspectives with Our Deep Insights Series

The Deep Insights Series (DIS) is Hyphen's ongoing programme of sessions with external guests, built to explore how AI is reshaping UX design, product strategy, and the way design teams work day to day. It exists because no one should walk away from a training session with exactly the same ideas they walked in with, and six editions in, that's still the point.

This is a look at how it started, how it runs, and why we keep believing in it, session after session.

Summary: The Deep Insights Series (DIS) is Hyphen's recurring internal programme of sessions with external guests, built to explore emerging trends, challenges, and perspectives in UX, research, and AI. Each edition brings in people living those same challenges outside Hyphen, from AI-driven workflows to design systems, so the team keeps learning directly from the field.

Before it had a name, it already had a purpose

This idea existed at Hyphen before I ever joined the team. It came from a genuine commitment, and a real concern.

Making sure the team keeps growing at the same pace as UX itself, a field that, as we all know, never stops changing, often faster than we can keep up with.

My role has been to carry forward something that already had purpose from day one. The Deep Insights Series was how we gave that need a shape: a recurring space to explore trends, challenges and new perspectives in UX, together with people living those same challenges outside Hyphen, and everything they've already learned from them.

What Is the Deep Insights Series? Exploring UX Trends, Product Strategy, and AI

In practice, that means a series of sessions with external guests, each one built around a real, specific theme, not abstract ideas about "the future of design."

6 Key AI and UX Topics We Explored (Workflows, Agents, and Design Systems)

Six editions in, we've already explored:

  • How we see and think about AI
  • Practical ways of using AI in day-to-day design workflows
  • The balance between synthetic and human insight
  • How AI is reshaping product roles
  • What it takes to build and work with a first AI agent
  • How to build and sustain design systems with AI

It's not a generic webinar or a closed masterclass. It's a conversation, first and foremost, built to bring practical insights and tools that teams can apply day to day, while keeping up with the trends and challenges reshaping the field.

We believe critical thinking is one of the most important skills for navigating the chaotic times we live in, and that's exactly what the Deep Insights Series tries to build. More than showing new ways of working, these sessions push us to look at new perspectives and question topics we often assume we already understand. And that's the beautiful part of knowledge: it's never finished.

How We Build Each Deep Insights Session

What people experience in an hour took far longer to build. Every choice, from the theme to the person standing at the front of the room, is the result of decisions made weeks, sometimes months, before the session goes live.

It starts with the theme. We keep one eye on where UX is heading as a field, and the other on what's actually being debated and worked through right now, in the projects, the tools, the conversations happening around us. Plenty of our themes come from that second side, suggested directly by our own people, from something they're struggling with, curious about, or simply can't stop talking about.

Then comes the harder part: finding the right person to bring it to life. We go looking for guests who connect naturally to what we're already exploring internally, but some of our options have come from somewhere closer to home, a colleague who heard someone brilliant speak and couldn't stop talking about it.

Once the theme and the guest are locked in, we don't just wait for the day to arrive. We sit down with each speaker, more than once, to dig into the topic together and shape the format until it feels right, so that what lands in front of our people isn't a lecture they sit through, but something they can actually walk away with and use.

And when the lights go down, the work isn't over. We chase feedback relentlessly, not as a formality, but because it's how the next theme gets chosen, and how we know exactly what to tweak before the next session goes live.

None of this looked this way from the start. This process has been refined session after session, and some of the biggest improvements came directly from the things that didn't go so well the first time around. We've learned as much from what fell flat as from what worked.

What Six Editions Have Taught Us

We're living through a challenge that's very specific to this moment: platforms evolve so fast that knowledge around AI, in particular, becomes outdated almost as quickly as it's gained. There's always a new "best way" or "best platform" for something, and the only way to keep up is to keep experimenting and testing. That's precisely why a space like this matters: it's not about arriving with finished answers, but about staying close enough to the field to keep asking better questions.

We also know that turning what we believe in into practice isn't always straightforward, and it looks different in every context. Every client operates in a different reality: some organisations have legitimate restrictions on using AI platforms, tied to security and data protection; others simply need their own time to open up to new ways of working.

Part of our role is navigating that diversity with respect, while still bringing back into Hyphen everything we learn out there, and, whenever we can, showing our clients new possibilities they hadn't considered yet.

None of that learning happens on its own, though. The technical knowledge matters, and it's a big part of why people show up, but six editions in, the biggest lesson has been about people, not just platforms.

It starts with organising the sessions themselves, which is far more complex than it looks: sound checks, lighting, making sure anyone joining remotely gets the same quality experience as the room. It's never a one-person job: there are always several hands behind the scenes, and it's ongoing work we keep learning to do better with every edition. We keep showing up for it because we genuinely believe in the good it brings, and that belief is what makes all the effort worth it, even on the days when logistics ask more of us than we'd like.

It continues with the guests who join us. None of this would be possible without a UX community that shares knowledge openly. Every speaker who has joined us has shared topics that matter and lessons learned, often through trial and error, not textbooks. That exchange is what makes our field stronger and keeps it moving forward, and we've had the honour of hosting some incredible people along the way.

It shows up, too, in our own team. Session after session, we've seen how strong we are as a group: we recognise mistakes, we're willing to admit when something could be better, and we keep trying to make each edition better than the last, despite all the organisational work it takes.

And it comes back, every time, to the people who show up to listen. They give their time, ask questions, stay curious even when a topic challenges what they already believe, because they're willing to hear it out. That mix of humility and genuine curiosity is what gives us feedback, topic suggestions, and the push to improve from one session to the next.

At the end of the day, what makes these sessions special isn't just the content; it's how aligned everyone is, inside and outside Hyphen, in making them better every time.

Why we're opening this up

To me, the Deep Insights Series was never about training in one direction only. It's about creating a space where learning is given and received in equal measure, where we learn as much from our guests as from the questions and curiosity of our own team. What we're after here is a habit, not a one-off moment: questioning what we already know, again and again, and bringing those conversations back into our clients' projects.

We're sharing this behind-the-scenes look because we believe how a team learns says as much about its work as the projects it delivers. If you're a client, this is what sits behind every recommendation we make. If you're thinking about joining Hyphen, this, the curiosity, the humility, the willingness to learn from people outside our walls, is what you'll find.

Why accessibility audits alone don't create accessible organisations

Why accessibility audits alone don't create accessible organisations

Accessibility audits fix products, not organisations — so the same WCAG issues keep coming back in the next project. The knowledge stays locked inside one team. The fix isn't better audits, it's embedding accessibility into everyday work, accessible-by-default Design Systems, and people who carry lessons between teams. Prevention beats repair.
